Come to the Connect meeting at CWI (Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica) on Thursday morning 13 September 2018 in Amsterdam and find out how this NWO Institute is involved with Chinese puzzle balls from the Rijksmuseum but also with ambulances and magnetic drum memories. And while you are doing that, you can meet your colleagues from all over NWO and NWO-I because everybody is welcome. Make sure you register soon though because the building can hold a maximum of 80 visitors. Mathematically calculated of course.

Have you come across the Russian Matryoshka doll? The hollow wooden doll that is part of a series of increasingly smaller dolls that nest inside each other? They have something similar in China but then in the form of a ball. However, the maker of this art object, exhibited in the Rijksmuseum, made the smaller balls inside via holes on the outside. Furthermore, the balls are made of ivory and cannot be opened. How many balls does such a ball contain? The answer is sometimes dozens. With the help of the FleX-ray scanner at CWI, it became clear how many balls the object contains and how these were made. During the guided tour at CWI you will learn more about this but also about the link that CWI has with ambulances and magnetic memory drums.

What is Connect?
Once per month we organise a Connect meeting at NWO. This is an internal meeting based around an interesting subject or organisation unit that inspires and connects. Meetings are organised by and for the employees of NWO and NWO-I. Three times per year we visit one of the nine NWO institutes. This time it is CWI's turn.
