Symposium 'Fundamentals of Life in the Universe'

The origin of life, on Earth and elsewhere, is a topic which fascinates the public, and which is ideally suited to bring together scientists from various disciplines. On August 31st and September 1st, a two-day symposium is being organised, called 'Fundamentals of Life in the Universe', covering a wide spectrum of topics, from planetary evolution to the fabrication of synthetic cells. The topics of the meeting are: The origin of the Earth and of life Predicting the evolution of life Building and directing life from molecule to biosphere Life in extraterrestrial environments Emergence and bridging of temporal and spatial scales Besides invited talks, the conference includes a keynote lecture by Ben Feringa (2016 Nobel laureate in chemistry), and a public lecture by Charley Lineweaver. We expect 150-200 participants from the fields of chemistry, geosciences, biology, astronomy, and physics. Participants will…

FAIR: Facts and Implementations - A workshop on the new requirements for Data in Open Science

On 14 September 2017 ePLAN organises a workshop for researchers and policy makers on FAIR data. FAIR data refers to data being Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, with the goal to make science more transparent, efficient and accessible. It is to be expected that FAIR principles will be increasingly more often used by funding agencies and institutes in the academic domain as a minimum standard for added value creation for data that are created in academia. It is therefore important, both for the development of good academic practice as for future funding of research to learn master the terms and ideas the constitute FAIR. So, for example, is the implementation of the term Interoperable no trivial matter and generally different depending on discipline. At the same time one of the goals is to share and reuse data across disciplines. Which…
