Highlight SRON12,000 new X-ray spectral lines described |
||||||
Many X-ray sources in the universe emit radiation with a "barcode" that discloses their properties. The code consists of precise peaks and troughs in the spectrum of the source spread over various "X-ray colours". Astronomers from NWO Institute SRON and the European Space Agency (ESA) have collected 12,000 lines with the satellite XMM-Newton, which has a spectrometer that was built under the leadership of SRON. Astronomers can use this catalogue for large-scale research of star populations. For example, they would like to know whether there is a causal relationship between the intensity of X-ray lines and UV lines in the spectrum of the same object. They would also like to be able to estimate how many stars contain a significant quantity of nitrogen. |
