NWO Utrecht moves to a new location on 3 June

On 3 June, colleagues from NWO Utrecht will start their working day in the new building Nova Zembla, at Winthontlaan 2 in Utrecht (next to the A12 motorway, Kanaleneiland junction). Due to its central location in the Netherlands, the building is also a good meeting place for colleagues from the NWO domains, NWO-I and for guests.

Proud as a peacock, institute manager Marjan Fretz gives us a tour around Matrix VII, the long-term accommodation of ARCNL, the Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography. Last December ARCNL's employees moved from the temporary office units at the Amsterdam Science Park to the brand-new Matrix VII building opposite. In the subsequent weeks, the labs were relocated. Marjan is pleased with the modern appearance of the building and all of the state-of-the-art facilities in the labs that have been fitted to make cutting-edge research possible.

Portal NWO-I People found to be secure after test

Most employees of NWO-I, except a few NWO Institutes, make use of the portal “NWO-I People”. Via this portal you can, for example, change your personal details, view your payslip, keep a record of your holiday leave and request business trips. As NWO-I wants to guarantee the security of this portal, NWO-I People was recently subjected to a test by an external party in the field of information security. This test revealed that access to the database is secure. However, it was found that the server could be brought down in the event of a hacker attack. This issue is now in the process of being solved with the implementation of a specific update by the supplier Furore.

Highlight Nikhef: neutrino detector KM3NeT places new line 2400 metres deep in the sea

At the end of February, a team of French technicians sunk the first of four new lines with measuring equipment for neutrino detector KM3NeT at a depth of 2400 metres from a vessel in the Mediterranean Sea near Toulon. A diving robot connected the line with 18 glass detector spheres attached to it. The spheres are filled with phototubes that measure light flashes which indicate the presence of neutrinos. Eventually, the KM3NeT detector will consist of a series of hundreds of lines with detector spheres in the deep sea near France and Italy, and in a later phase near Greece as well.

News from the NWO Central Works Council

The NWO Central Works Council (COR NWO) represents the interests of all NWO and NWO-I employees in consultation with the NWO executive board. In this newsletter you can read all about the Central Works Council elections on 8 April and a survey that the Central Works Council recently held among NWO employees about “Unequal treatment” compared to colleagues at the universities and NWO-I.
