Professors at NWO-I
All of our institutes work closely with universities in the Netherlands and abroad. NWO-I is made up of over 100 professors employed at national institutes and universities. In June 2025, NWO-I adopted a new professorial policy.
New procedure for nomination and appointment of professors at NWO-I
All researchers nominated and (re)appointed for a professorship or professorship by special appointment on behalf of the NWO Institutes will from now on be nominated and (re)appointed by Foundation NWO-I.
Previously, other foundations also nominated researchers from NWO Institutes for professorships. In practice, this sometimes led to a lack of clarity. With this new policy, NWO-I improves the uniformity and transparency surrounding the appointment of professors working at one or more of our ten research institutes. You can find the policy document at the bottom of this page.
Uniformity, and clear agreements
Part of the new uniform professorship policy is that largely the same requirements and wishes now apply for each appointment. For instance, the Foundation board of NWO-I is also informed with every nomination. For example, clear agreements on possible remuneration and teaching duties are made in the process. Moreover, a clear and uniform procedure gives universities a better idea of what a collaboration with NWO-I entails.
Interviews: NWO-I professors on their research for a sustainable futureDaan van Uhm (NSCR), Laura Villanueva (NIOZ) and Valentin Robu (CWI) are all researchers and professors at NWO-I and a Dutch university. Daan specialises in environmental criminology, Laura analyses the climate change response of marine microbes and Valentin studies the viability of artificial intelligence for renewable energy integration into smart grids. Personnel newsletter Inside NWO-I asks all three about their respective research, their chairs and professorial activities and how they like to spend their spare time. You can read the interviews on the NWO-website. |
