Paternity leave for the partner

With effect from 1 January 2019, the parental leave when a partner gives birth had already been increased. With effect from 1 July 2020, additional parental leave can now be taken.

Paternity leave
With the birth of a child, the paternity leave for the partner is once the number of hours worked in a week. This leave is with full pay and is taken in accordance with the employee’s wishes within four weeks of the day on which the child was born.

Additional paternity leave for the partner
Since 1 July 2020, the employee is entitled to five weeks of additional paternity leave if the spouse or relational partner gives birth. This additional leave should be used within six months after the birth of the child and is unpaid. It can only be taken if the employee has taken the standard paternity leave described above. During the additional leave, the employee can receive a benefit payment from the Netherlands Employees Insurance Agency (UWV). This payment is at most 70 percent of the maximum daily wage. The additional leave is requested in whole weeks. However, if requested, this leave can be spread over a period longer than five weeks.
