NWO-I Annual Report 2023 online
2023 was another peak year for the NWO institutes.
The broad institute evaluations by independent committees that took place in 2023 confirmed that our institutes are among the absolute world leaders and have a high degree of scientific and social relevance. That is a great result of which our institutes, and therefore all of NWO, can rightly rightly be proud.
In terms of research infrastructure, 2023 built on the success of the previous year.
The organisation around the Einstein Telescope has continued to grow and professionalise as evidenced by the signing of the intention to bring the Einstein Telescope to the EMR region by the ministers of the Netherlands, Belgium, Flanders, Wallonia and North Rhine-Westphalia.
At ASTRON, the world's largest radio telescope LOFAR has been further strengthened by the European Commission recognising LOFAR as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).
The development of the research fleet for NIOZ is also progressing on schedule, with the launch of the medium-sized ship, the Wim Wolff, at the beginning of 2024 and the start of the construction of the largest research vessel.
Also worth mentioning is the wealth of scientific successes achieved by the NWO institutes, the majority of which was reflected in over 2,000 publications, contributions to software, algorithms, numerous university PhDs, data collections and patents.
The world of science policy continued to move in 2023, as well. Partly due to geopolitical tensions in the world, there was continued focus on knowledge security. In addition, the increased attention for diversity and inclusion and the further development of a healthy research culture are also high on the agenda.
