NWO Institutes to publish in Open Access form

‘It’s a question of pushing back boundaries and trying things out’

Open Access is the broad international movement that strives for free and open online access to scientific information, such as publications and data. This ensures a greater (digital) dissemination and findability of scientific results and, with that, a greater potential impact on science and society. ‘Thanks, in part, to Open Access, we were able to rapidly develop a vaccine against COVID-19’, said NWO president Marcel Levi during this introductory webinar on 19 April 2021. NWO is committed to Open Access. In September 2018, it joined cOAlition S: a group of national research funding bodies that tries to accelerate the transition to full and immediate Open Access as part of Plan S. Policy officer Jacqueline Mout from the NWO-I office: ‘Now that the implementation of Plan S as part of the NWO grant procedures has been arranged, it is fantastic that we also have policy to shape the ideology of Plan S within NWO-I.’

NWO celebrates… Father’s Day

This is the second edition of ‘NWO celebrates…’, a section in which we highlight special (festive) days that we can celebrate together as NWO employees. On 20 June, we celebrated Father’s Day. For some people, this is not a particularly special day, but for others, it is. Dennis Hoencamp (communication advisor NWO-D) talks about how he views various stereotypes about fathers, how he experiences being a father and how he combines this with his work at NWO. He is married to Anne, and together they have two daughters, Noa (5) and Lynn (3). Do you also have a suggestion for a special (festive) day for the section “NWO celebrates…”, and would you like to be interviewed as well? Then please contact us!

Highlight SRON: filter wheel and calibration system for XRISM telescope to Japan

In 2023, the Japanese space organisation JAXA will launch the X-ray satellite XRISM into orbit around the Earth. Amongst other things, the satellite will observe black holes and supernovas, the phenomenon during which a star explodes spectacularly. On 9 June 2021, NWO Institute SRON sent its contribution to the XRISM telescope to Japan, where JAXA will mount everything on the satellite. SRON’s contribution is the filter wheel and the calibration system, which it has worked on for the past two years. The filter wheel rotates different filters for the X-ray camera of XRISM, so that astronomers can filter out the brightness and wavelength of the cosmic radiation as required. The calibration system contains modulating X-ray sources that provide a reference spectrum.
