NWO encourages PhD students to dedicate a separate chapter of their thesis to valorisation aspects of their PhD research. This chapter should address issues like:

  • how can my PhD work contribute to solving the needs of society;
  • are long term applications of my work conceivable;
  • which actions should be made to achieve this etc.

The NWO Physics Valorisation Chapter Prize emphasises the importance NWO attaches to valorisation and aims to make PhD students more aware that application of their research results can be of importance for society. The prize money is € 5,000; the winner is free to choose how to spend this amount.
The prize 'FOM Valorisation Chapter Prize' was awarded for the last time in 2016 during Physics@Veldhoven 2017. In 2017 the new NWO organisation will award the 'NWO Physics Valorisation Chapter Prize'. Only FOM PhD students could be nominated for the FOM Valorisation Chapter Prize. For the NWO Physics Valorisation Chapter Prize, all PhD students who gain their doctorate in the Netherlands in the field of physics research and who dedicate a separate chapter in their thesis to valorisation aspects of their PhD research can be nominated.
As of 1 January 2017 FOM is converted to NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO. Together with other NWO divisions FOM forms a new organisation, as part of the NWO Transition. For further information we refer you to the information page about the NWO transition.
