Institutes and transition
From 2017 onwards the current FOM organisation will form a new NWO organisation together with other NWO units. During the course of 2017 all of the information on this website will be modified in accordance with the new organisation structure of NWO. For further information we refer you to the information page about the NWO transition.
Due to the transition FOM has been divided into three parts: one part (granting) has become part of the NWO Domain Science, one part has become part of the Operational Management unit of the new NWO, and the part that supports the Institutes (AMOLF, ARCNL, DIFFER and Nikhef) and the university workgroups has been reorganised into NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO. The NWO Institutes NSCR, NIOZ, ASTRON, CWI and SRON will merge with NWO-I with effect from 1 January 2018.

FOM research takes place at two types of locations, at institutes and in research groups and universities. There are four Institutes: Institute AMOLF in Amsterdam, Institute DIFFER in Eindhoven, Institute for Subatomic Physics in Amsterdam (which is incorporated in the partnership of the National Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef) and the Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL*).
Unlike other FOM activities, the FOM Institutes have their own infrastructure. Institutes therefore have their own technical staff, workplaces et cetera.

You can find further information about the institutes on the page of the institute concerned and on each institute's own website.

Over the next few years, FOM intends to make considerable investments in stimulating fundamental energy research and it has decided to expand its Institute DIFFER (Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research), the Dutch base for research into nuclear fusion, into an institute for fundamental energy research with a national coordinating role. The institute shall be set up along the same lines as the Nikhef partnership of FOM with the universities, with the universities housing focus groups. The main location is as from 11 March 2015 housed on the campus of Eindhoven University of Technology. You can find further information about the relocation of DIFFER and the expansion of the institute on the webpage about DIFFER

* The Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL) is a public-private partnership between ASML, FOM, NWO, UvA and VU.
