The Semiconductor&Nanostructures group at the High Field Magnet Laboratory (HFML) in Nijmegen is focussing on the electronic properties of new quantum materials, in particular by using transport experiments at low-temperatures and high magnetic fields. Within this project you will investigate electronic transport in mesoscopic structures made from 2D materials (such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides) up to the GHz range. Our research is embedded in the Institute for Molecules and Materials at Radboud University in Nijmegen and the broader activities of HFML as an international research facility.

Job description
During this project you will develop and exploit an experimental setup able to measure electric resistance by means of pulsed techniques and high-frequency techniques with a time resolution below a nanosecond. Starting with 2D and 1D conventional semiconductor heterostructures you will perform proof-of-principle experiments to investigate the propagation of electric pulses through mesoscopic structure. Subsequently it is planned to employ the technique also to new 2D materials with intriguing electronic properties. All experiments will be carried out in magnetic fields up to 38 T and at low temperatures down to 50 mK. You will actively cooperate with other PhD students and postdocs of HFML as well as external users working on related topics and you will be involved in helping external users carry out related experiments in high magnetic fields.

HFML is an international research facility, jointly run by Radboud University and NWO. We use and develop high magnetic fields and state-of-the-art instrumentation to carry out pioneering research by both in-house and external users in the fields of Semiconductors & Nanostructures, Correlated Electron Systems and Soft Condensed Matter & Nanomaterials. Job requirements
We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in experimental physics who is motivated to work in an international and wide-ranging research environment. You should have master’s degree in (solid state) physics or related subject areas. Experience in low-temperature magneto-transport and/or high frequency techniques is welcome though not mandatory.

Conditions of employment
When fulfilling a PhD position at NWO-I, the Institutes Organisation of NWO, you will get the status of junior scientist. 
You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits NWO-I offers. You will get a contract for four years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,937 euro gross per month. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent. 
You are supposed to have a thesis finished at the end of your four year term with NWO-I. 
A training programme is part of the agreement. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the additional education and supervising that you specifically need. This plan also defines which teaching activities you will be responsible (up to a maximum of ten percent of your time).
