Now available to everyone at NWO-I: toolkits on knowledge security, scientific integrity and open science

NWO-I compiles practical and applicable information in three useful toolkits

What exactly does the term 'open science' encompassWhat should I pay attention to when starting a research project that involves potential knowledge security risksHow do I discuss scientific integrity with my colleagues? The NWO-I office hopes to answer these kinds of questions with three handy, brand-new toolkits on the themes of knowledge security, open science and scientific integrity. The toolkits are now available to all NWO-I employees.

Take a look at the three toolkits:

Thecla van Wageningen and Ella Bosch, policy advisers at the NWO-I agency, compiled the toolkits. Thecla explains more:

Why did you create these toolkits?

"Researchers are busy with their own research, but at the same time there are science-wide themes that every researcher has to deal withKnowledge security, scientific integrity and open science are fields where a lot is happening at the momentNew codes of conduct and guidelines are being introduced, which we at NWO-I also endorse. With the toolkits, we offer practical approaches to these themes that are directly useful to researchers. They also contain tools for discussing topics such as scientific integrity with your colleagues. At the same time, the toolkits also include all the latest developments relating to these themes. In this way, we make it possible for everyone to work with these three topics in a practical and accessible way.

Who are the toolkits intended for?

“First and foremost, for researchers at our institutes and anyone involved in researchWe have made the toolkits accessible in such a way that they are as closely aligned as possible with research practice. The toolkits are designed as interactive PDFs. They are not primarily intended to be read from cover to cover, but to allow you to quickly click through to the topics that are relevant to you. And if you do want to read them from cover to cover, they provide a good overview of current developments in that area.”

How do you use the toolkits?

Suppose you are looking for a way to have a relaxed conversation with your colleagues about scientific integrityIn that case, the toolkit offers, for example, the option of a game about scientific integrity. Or perhaps you want to know how to prevent unwanted knowledge transferIn that case, you can consult the knowledge security toolkit. The toolkits contain an interactive home page with links to these types of topics. They also contain all kinds of referrals to, for example, internal confidential advisors and national expertise on the relevant theme. This allows you to find the information that is relevant to you as quickly as possible."

Portfolio holders on the toolkits

The thematic portfolio holders of the institutes also endorse the need for clear information on the three topics:

  • Dick Broekhuis is institute manager of the CWI, and portfolio holder for open science.. . and is pleased with the toolkits: "There is a lot going on around these three themes, and in order not to lose sight of the big picture, the relevant information has been collected in these toolkits. It is available in an accessible way, and if more in-depth information is needed, the references are there."
  • Peter van der Laan, director of NSCR and portfolio holder for scientific integrity, is also positive: "Developments in the field of knowledge security, scientific integrity and open access are certainly not standing still. Our colleagues at the institute could use some help to 'keep up'. That is why it is good that the toolkits have been (further) developed: they help us find our way through the sometimes complex material we deal with on an almost daily basis."

Digital accessibility

These toolkits do not meet the requirements of the Digital Accessibility Decree. NWO-I is working on a new website, which will include the toolkits in an accessible format. If you have any problems reading the information in the toolkit, please contact us at info@nwo-i.nl.
