NWO-I’s full name is Foundation for Dutch Scientific Research Institutes. It is an independent foundation incorporated under private law (not a governmental organization). Because of its national interest, it is supervised by NWO (the Dutch Research Council, a governmental body). NWO-I is an umbrella organization for nine national research institutes: AMOLF, ARCNL, ASTRON, CWI, DIFFER, Nikhef, NIOZ, NSCR and SRON.

The NWO institutes consolidate their strengths around research questions and connect Dutch science with the international scientific community.

NWO-I employs about 1.700 people and is the employer of the following personnel:

  • The NWO institutes AMOLF, ARCNL, ASTRON, CWI, DIFFER, Nikhef, NIOZ, NSCR and SRON.
  • PhDs, postdocs and technicians from about 48 research groups where physics research takes place at Dutch universities and knowledge institutions. These research groups are part of NWO-I. The research takes place until the FOM projects still running have all been completed.
  • The NWO-I Office.
