What are ancillary activities?
Ancillary activities are activities that an NWO-I employee — whether paid or unpaid — performs in addition to their primary job at NWO-I. Engaging in ancillary activities can positively contribute to the quality of work performance. And that can be in the interest of NWO-I as an employer. Examples of ancillary activities include freelance assignments, volunteer work, running one’s own business, board positions at associations, and teaching courses.
Why does NWO-I register and publish ancillary activities?
It is important that NWO-I, as an employer, knows what ancillary activities its employees are engaged in, in order to prevent any (appearance of) conflict of interest between the duties and interests of NWO-I and an employee’s ancillary activities.
Central registration also allows for verification of whether organisations where NWO-I employees perform ancillary activities are also suppliers to NWO-I and whether this poses a conflict of interest. Review, registration, and, where necessary, publication of ancillary activities are necessary to safeguard the impartiality and independence of NWO-I. The current Collective Labour Agreement Research Institutes (Cao-OI) and the NWO implementing regulations (IR) stipulate that employees of NWO-I and NWO must report their ancillary activities.
