Research

The ten national research institutes of the Dutch Research Council (NWO) carry out cutting-edge research. They do so in collaboration with scientists from universities and other research institutions in the Netherlands, as well as within numerous major international partnerships.

Research with impact

Through their research, our institutes make a difference to science and society. For example, they develop new materials for a wide range of applications, conduct research into climate change and help to develop guidelines for more safety in public spaces.

Large-Scale Research Facilities

Many of our NWO institutes have advanced research facilities, such as the MagnumPSI at DIFFER in Eindhoven and the ASTRON radio telescopes in Dwingeloo and Exloo. In addition, NWO-I is part of international partnerships that manage key research infrastructures, such as CERN, ITER and ESTEC-ESA.

A healthy research culture

At NWO-I, we are actively working to foster a healthy and inspiring research culture. An environment in which care for people, research quality and collaboration are central.

Across NWO-I and within each institute, we are working on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), and the principles of Recognition & Rewards  are being implemented for our situation. We endorse the Dutch Code of Conduct for Research Integrity and encourage making research results available to the public as widely as possible (Open Science).

Knowledge security

NWO-I wants research at NWO-I to be conducted safely and in a safe environment.

In practical terms, this means that the core academic values of integrity and independence are upheld when conducting research. It also means that, where possible, research findings can be shared within the framework of Open Science.

In a safe environment means that researchers and staff feel free and respected, enabling them to contribute fully to the research.
