Marcel Levi has been president of NWO since 1 April 2021. Before joining NWO, Levi was CEO of University College London Hospitals (UCLH) and professor and clinical dean at University College London from 2016 to 2021. Levi has extensive national and international experience in the organisation and funding of scientific research.
NWO Executive Board
The Executive Board is NWO’s highest governing body. It consists of the president, the vice president, and the four chairs of the NWO domains. They are appointed or reappointed by the Minister of Education, Culture and Science on the recommendation of the Supervisory Board. The president and vice president are appointed for a period of five years. The other members, who are also chairs of a domain board, are appointed for a term of three years. The (vice) president and chairs may be reappointed once.
NWO-I Foundation Board
NWO is an organization incorporated by public law and is part of the Dutch government. NWO's task is to promote research with scientific and societal impact. NWO-I is an independent foundation, and thus a separate legal entity, and not part of the government. NWO does however supervise NWO-I because of the importance of the scientific research that is carried out in it, and to monitor the integrity of NWO-I as a public benefit institution. To this end, board members of NWO have a seat in the Foundation Board of NWO-I without receiving benefits for these supervisory tasks.
The NWO-I Foundation Board is responsible for the operation of the NWO-I Institutes. The NWO Executive Board, which forms a personal union with the NWO-I Foundation Board, is responsible for the integral strategy, mission and programming of the NWO Institutes.
