New director of NIOZ as of 1 September 2026: Maaike van de Kamp-Romijn

The NWO-I foundation board has appointed Maaike van de Kamp-Romijn as the new director of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research as of 1 September.

With her appointment, NIOZ gains a strategic and connecting leader with extensive experience at the intersection of science, organisational development and societal collaboration. Van de Kamp-Romijn succeeds Han Dolman.

Broad experience

Maaike van de Kamp-Romijn currently serves as Deputy Director General and Director of Research and Education at Naturalis Biodiversity Center. In that role, she has worked closely with NIOZ for many years and is well acquainted with both the institute and the research field. Van de Kamp-Romijn has broad experience across a range of scientific domains, including marine science. Throughout her career, she has specialised in connecting scientific excellence and expertise with strategy and societal impact.

Building on excellent marine research

Maaike van de Kamp-Romijn is looking forward to her new role: “NIOZ is an institute with a strong national and international reputation, unique research facilities and highly committed staff. I look forward to working together with researchers, staff and partners to continue building excellent marine research and making its societal relevance visible. Especially at a time when issues surrounding climate, biodiversity and the ocean are becoming increasingly urgent, NIOZ plays a crucial role.”

Van de Kamp-Romijn is known as a leader who is able to translate vision and strategy into a concrete approach, with a strong focus on collaboration, innovation and a working environment in which professionals can perform at their best.

Connecting leadership
