Open days at nine NWO institutes
During the Weekend of Science, nine of our ten institutes will be opening their doors to the general public. For example, you can visit Amsterdam if you’d like to find out more about research into the smallest particles. There, you can also solve maths puzzles, see how researchers split a beam of light and create a colour wheel. In Dwingeloo, you can step inside the ‘Milky Way’, and in Eindhoven you’ll learn why they want to replicate the sun’s heat on Earth. In Nijmegen, you’ll find out more about research into levitating vehicles. On Texel, you’ll feel like an aquanaut on an interactive journey to the bottom of the deep sea, and in Leiden you can solder a satellite.
The open days are suitable for all ages. Entry is free. More information about the activities and locations for each NWO institute can be found further down this page.

AMOLF, ARCNL, CWI and Nikhef: Saturday 3 October
There’s plenty to do at the Amsterdam Science Park during Science Weekend. Four of our institutes based there are opening their doors: AMOLF, ARCNL, CWI and Nikhef. The open day is suitable for everyone, of all ages, who wants to find out more about science. ASTRON: Sunday 4 October
Step into the Milky Way and take part in experiments, listen to the passionate staff and enjoy a fun afternoon full of astronomy and technology. You can visit the radio telescope next to the ASTRON building. You can read more about the open day ASTRON’s LinkedIn page (only in Dutch).

DIFFER: Saturday 3 October
At DIFFER, scientists are working on solutions for the energy of our future. One such solution is nuclear fusion – replicating the sun’s energy on Earth. Another is chemical energy, where researchers study materials, discover new ones and investigate ways to store energy. Take a look around the research labs or programme your own light sensor. HFML-FELIX: Saturday 3 October
At HFML-FELIX in Nijmegen, you’ll learn all about the research being carried out using lasers and magnets. This enables the discovery of new materials for super-fast and sustainable electronics, the design of levitating vehicles and gaining a better understanding of the atmospheres surrounding planets in space. NIOZ Texel: Saturday 3 October and NIOZ Yerseke: Saturday 10 October
NIOZ is organising two Open Days to celebrate its 150th anniversary! During these Open Days, you’ll get a glimpse behind the scenes of our marine research. Through activities, experiments and talks, NIOZ staff will share their research, their passion and the wonders of our blue planet. Are you curious to the very bottom? Come and find out at NIOZ! SRON Leiden: Saturday 26 September
At SRON, you’ll step into the world of space research. Solder a satellite in the Fun Lab, watch a planetarium show, or learn what happens near super-hot black holes and how stars are born.
