NIOZ

NIOZ is the Netherlands’ national oceanographic institute and centre of expertise for the ocean, sea and the coast. NIOZ promotes a fundamental understanding of marine systems, how they are changing, the role they play in climate and biodiversity, and how they provide sustainable solutions for society, both now and in the future.

Research

The health of our oceans, seas and coasts is inextricably linked to the climate and biodiversity. Researchers at NIOZ are expanding our knowledge in this area, improving predictions of future changes, exploring how harmful effects can be mitigated, and investigating how the ocean can be used and protected sustainably. The research covers five key themes:

  • Ocean and climate: understanding how the ocean and the Earth’s climate shape one another.
  • Marine biodiversity: the origins, richness, resilience and genetic diversity of life in the ocean.
  • How the ocean works: the processes that drive the ocean system.
  • Working with nature: nature-based solutions to protect and restore coasts.
  • Humans and the ocean: how people depend on the ocean, but also change it.

With locations on the Wadden Sea and North Sea (Texel) and in the Southwest Delta (Yerseke), NIOZ facilitates researchers from Dutch universities and institutes. NIOZ technicians build complex, bespoke measuring equipment, and the institute has developed and manages the upgraded research fleet for current and future generations of Dutch marine researchers.
