NSCR

The NSCR conducts academic research into crime, victimisation and law enforcement, and the interplay between them. It operates at the intersection of theory, practice and policy, focuses on existing and emerging forms of crime, studies victimisation in the broadest sense (affecting both individuals and society), and investigates the functioning and effects of law enforcement (preventive and reactive).

Research

The NSCR’s research programme is based on four key questions: Who commits which crimes and why? Where, when and how are crimes committed? What are the consequences for victims and society? How is crime addressed and what are the effects of these responses? These four research questions are studied either individually or in conjunction with one another and form the basis for the following research groups:

  • Offenders: risk of offending, when and why.
  • Crime events in context: influence of environment, technology and interactions.
  • Victimization: causes, reactions and consequences of victimisation.
  • Responses to crime and its effects: legislation, law enforcement and sanctions.
  • Evidence-based Policing: what works in policing.
  • Situational causes of offline and online crime.
