Illegal fishing is a particularly pressing form of environmental crime worldwide, with an estimated value of between 11 and 36 billion US dollars and disastrous consequences for marine life.

With the ‘Fishing in Troubled Waters’ project, the NSCR promotes research into environmental crime, and in particular into illegal fishing in the Netherlands. Despite the growing social significance, little is still known about the nature, scale and consequences of environmental crime in the Netherlands, including illegal fishing in Dutch waters.

Within this project, the NSCR brings together various disciplines and areas of expertise within the research community and is working on the development of a data infrastructure for research into environmental crime in the Netherlands.
