Facilities and Research
Nanotechnology deals with extremely small structures and is crucial for devices such as solar cells and sensors. The Netherlands is a leading player in nanotechnology. NanoLab Amsterdam of NWO institute AMOLF is located at Amsterdam Science Park, and consists of a cleanroom with facilities for microscopy, electron microscopy, various lithography methods, plasma etching, material deposition, and material analysis. These facilities allow users to design, fabricate, and study their own micro- and nanostructures.
TEM microscope
Since 2024, AMOLF has been equipped with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The TEM was custom built for the institute and is unique worldwide due to its combination of techniques. The microscope enables researchers to observe materials at the atomic scale and study how they evolve over time and when exposed to light.
Access for researchers
The equipment in the AMOLF NanoLab is accessible to both private and public researchers and can be booked through a registration procedure. The NanoLab staff support users in setting up their work in the lab and provide instructions on operating the equipment. It is also possible to have a nanofabrication or nanoanalysis task carried out by one of the technicians.
